You are probably already acquainted with the importance of having a large vocabulary. But just in case you need your memory refreshed…
Having a large vocabulary is often (if unfairly) associated with having a high level of intelligence. Therefore, if you have a relatively large vocabulary, people are more likely to perceive you as intelligent. This in turn enhances your ability to get a job and gain admission to various social groups.
In addition, having a large vocabulary changes the way that you view the world. Things have a tendency to achieve a higher level of reality in one’s mind once they have names attached to them. For example: to a person who does not know the word “Toad,” there is no differentiation between frogs and toads; they are all a part of the same amorphous group of animals. But once the new term is introduced, the two things begin to be recognized as such.
I could go on listing reasons why having a large vocabulary is beneficial, but I don’t want to be overly prolix.
